The Oxfordshire Panels
THE OXFORDSHIRE PANELS
CELEBRATING 1,000 YEARS OF OXFORSHIRE
In 2006-7 The Oxon & Bucks branch of the British Woodcarvers Association, accepted a commission from Oxford Inspires, Organizers of the county’s 1000 year celebration to create 3 sets of five Carvings covering important events from the past 1,000 years. Oxford Inspires sent a list of subjects to be included. These carvings were produced free of charge, took the individual carvers up to 15 months to produce. The materials provided by local businesses.
The carvings were completed and presented to the people of Oxfordshire via Oxfordshire County Council who then asked for them to be exhibited around the county – eventually being placed in Oxford Library. The panels where transported to many different locations over the first few years and they have appeared in many public shows including, Art In Action, Newbury Show, Countryfile Live.
Oxfordshire County Council have been unable to provide a public display area for the Panels. The Oxford Library was demolished and rebuilt as part of the Westgate Centre with no space for the Panels. The problem OCC have in displaying these in a placing them public view, is that so many of their buildings in Oxford are listed and the newer modern ones are not design to take this type of display.
In May 2019 the panels were offered a home and installed in Witney Blanket Hall. WITNEY BLANKET HALL is open from 10am to 5pm every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, & Saturday definitely worth a visit
